SMART recovery

SMART (Self-Management And Recovery Training) Recovery can help people recover from all types of addictive behaviour.

So, what does it involve?

Individuals who have chosen to abstain, or are considering abstinence from addictive behaviours, can be supported through SMART by being taught how to change self-defeating thinking, emotions and actions while also working towards long-term quality of life.

This process helps individuals to gain independence from addiction through a four-point programme:

  • Coping with urges
  • Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviours
  • Living a balanced life
  • The four-point programme uses a variety of tools and techniques and individuals are encouraged to learn and practice them as they progress through the stages of the programme.

These tools include ABCs of REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy) which look at Actions, the Behaviours that follow and the consequences of those behaviours. This process of behaviour analysis is taught as a skill to assist with urge coping and emotional upsets.
